Is Flax Seed oil Safe for Diabetes?

The number of people living with diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate, along with those in the pre-diabetic stage. This has prompted doctors and researchers to look for foods and natural remedies that can effectively help in controlling blood sugar levels. Among these, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, also known as linseed oil, have shown significant health benefits, particularly for people with diabetes.

Flaxseed oil is a pale yellow oil extracted from the dried seeds of the flax plant through pressing. It is one of the richest sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid. In the body, ALA can be converted into EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) with the help of certain vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Consuming one to three tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily can provide about seven grams of ALA per tablespoon, which is essential for brain health, heart health, and blood sugar management. However, it’s important to balance omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the diet, ideally at a ratio of 3:1, to maximize the benefits.

Flaxseed oil supports heart health, lowers cholesterol, promotes healthy skin, aids weight management, improves digestion, and helps reduce inflammation. For diabetics, it can improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate blood sugar levels. However, it should be consumed in moderation, as excessive intake may increase bleeding time and slow clotting. People allergic to flaxseeds should avoid it altogether.

At FFD, it is recommended that individuals take one to two tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily, depending on their health needs. Regular use, combined with a balanced diet, can make a noticeable difference in overall health and diabetes management.
