Let's address this right away... Jennifer Lopez was nothing short of phenomenal! She perfectly captured the grace, strength, and allure of an Old Hollywood STAR. This was evident not only in her singing and dancing but also in her acting. Her accent and movements were spot on. I genuinely wish the film had provided her with more material to showcase her talent. I can't write this review without highlighting her role as the 'Spider Woman'... as the film described, she embodies both death and life. Lopez was both terrifying and stunning. "A Visit" stands out as one of my favorite scenes in the film.
The Flixtor movie itself felt like a mixed bag for me. I found it enjoyable! However, I grappled with the stark contrast between the dark themes of the prison cell scenes and the campy, fun nature of the movie within the movie. The film started off strong, but as it progressed, there were times when it lost my attention. The transitions between the Spider Woman and reality weren't as seamless as they were at the film's outset. I also believe they should have established a clearer visual representation of what the dictatorship looked like outside the prison walls. Instead, the film just drops us into the prison cell.
Regardless, Tonatiuh and Diego Luna delivered outstanding performances. I can't comprehend how some critics claim their love and bond appeared out of nowhere. The care, empathy, and compromise they gradually exhibited for each other clearly illustrate why their relationship evolved. Tonatiuh's character truly captured my heart. The ending was gut-wrenching, and I definitely left the theater in tears.
