Tiramisu — the name alone sounds indulgent, doesn’t it? 🇮🇹
This iconic Italian dessert, meaning “pick me up,” is a layered masterpiece of coffee-soaked ladyfingers, rich mascarpone cream, and a dusting of cocoa powder. Whether you're preparing for a dinner party or simply treating yourself, homemade tiramisu is surprisingly easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through an authentic tiramisu recipe, along with helpful tips and variations to make it your own.
Ingredients (Serves 6–8)
-
6 egg yolks
-
¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
-
1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
-
1 cup (225g) mascarpone cheese (room temperature)
-
2 cups (475ml) strong espresso or coffee (cooled)
-
2–3 tbsp coffee liqueur (optional, e.g., Kahlúa)
-
1 pack (200g) ladyfinger biscuits (savoiardi)
-
Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
-
Dark chocolate shavings (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Whip the Egg Yolks & Sugar
In a heat-safe bowl, whisk egg yolks and sugar together. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler method) and whisk constantly for 6–8 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly and turns pale yellow.
Let it cool to room temperature.
Step 2: Whip the Cream
Using a hand or stand mixer, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
Step 3: Mix in the Mascarpone
Fold the mascarpone cheese into the cooled egg mixture until smooth. Then gently fold in the whipped cream. Be careful not to deflate the mixture — it should be light and fluffy.
Step 4: Prepare the Coffee Dip
Mix the espresso (or strong coffee) with the optional coffee liqueur in a shallow dish.
Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee — just 1 second per side so they don’t get soggy.
Step 5: Assemble the Tiramisu
In a 9x9 inch dish or similar:
-
Lay soaked ladyfingers in a single layer to cover the base.
-
Spread half the mascarpone mixture over the top.
-
Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers.
-
Top with the remaining mascarpone cream.
Step 6: Chill & Serve
Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, ideally overnight, to allow the flavors to develop.
Before serving, dust generously with cocoa powder and top with chocolate shavings if desired.
Pro Tips
-
Use room-temperature mascarpone for a smooth texture.
-
Don't over-soak the ladyfingers — they absorb coffee very quickly.
-
Chill overnight for best flavor and texture.
-
Want alcohol-free? Skip the liqueur entirely — it’ll still taste amazing!
