How to Make a Tote Bag with Lining – DIY Tutorial
Looking for a stylish and sturdy tote bag you can sew yourself? Adding a lining not only strengthens your tote but also gives it a polished, professional look. Here’s a simple guide anyone can follow — even beginners!
What You’ll Need:
-
Outer fabric (canvas or polyester)
-
Lining fabric (cotton or polyester blend)
-
Matching thread
-
Sewing machine (or needle for hand sewing)
-
Two straps (canvas, webbing, or matching fabric)
-
Pins, scissors, iron, and ruler
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Cut Fabric Panels
-
Outer fabric: 2 panels (15" x 16")
-
Lining: 2 panels (same size)
-
Straps: 2 pieces (20"–24" long)
2. Sew Outer Bag
-
Place outer pieces right sides together
-
Sew sides and bottom
-
Press seams
3. Sew Lining (Leave a Gap!)
-
Same as outer, but leave a 3–4" gap in the bottom seam for turning
4. Assemble the Bag
-
Turn outer bag right side out
-
Insert it into the lining (right sides together)
-
Align top edges and sew around the top
5. Turn & Finish
-
Pull the bag through the gap in the lining
-
Stitch the gap closed
-
Push lining inside the bag and topstitch around the opening
