What are smoked baked potatoes?

Smoked Baked Potatoes are a nice twist on oven-baked potatoes where potatoes are cooked in a smoker, infusing them with a rich smoky flavor while maintaining the traditional oven-baked texture.

Which type of potatoes works best for smoking?

Russet potatoes are the most commonly used variety for smoking due to their starchy texture, which results in fluffy interiors. However, you can also try other varieties like Yukon Gold or sweet potatoes for different flavor profiles.

How long does it take to smoke baked potatoes?

The smoking time depends on the size of the potatoes and the temperature of your smoker. Generally, it takes around 2 hours to smoke medium to large-sized potatoes at 250°F (121°C).

What are some popular toppings for smoked baked potatoes?

You can get creative with toppings! Some popular choices include sour cream, butter, shredded cheese, chives, bacon bits, and barbecue sauce.

Ingredients

Main

  • 4 russet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, substitute any other vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons Kosher salt

Steps

1.      Preheat the smoker

Preheat smoker to 250°F according to the manufacturer's instructions.

·  ·  Prep the potatoes for smoking

Evenly coat the potatoes with the olive oil so there are no dry spots. Sprinkle the Kosher salt over the potatoes and toss them until the salt covers the entire surface of the potatoes.

·  Smoke the potatoes

Place the potatoes on the smoker and smoke at 250°F until they reach an internal temperature between 205°F and 212°F, approximately 2 hours depending on the size of the potatoes.

I recommend using an internal meat thermometer to easily keep track of the temperature. Remember, always cook to temperature and not time! You can also insert a toothpick into the potato to test doneness.

·  Serve the smoked baked potatoes

Serve the smoked baked potatoes immediately after removing them from the grill. Top them with butter, sour cream, cheese, and green onions, or any combination you prefer. Enjoy!
